Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health launched

October 2007

On 2 October 2007, the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health was launched at The Art Gallery of SA. Approximately 200 people gathered together to celebrate the achievement of establishing this ground breaking research centre.

The guest-of-honour for the night was Sir James Hardy OBE. The SA Minister for Health, the Hon John Hill MP spoke. The Adelaide Male Voice Choir entertained and inspired us with their music. Mr Phil Smyth, AM, Head Coach of the Adelaide 36ers was the emcee for the evening. Professor James A. McWha, Vice Chancellor and President of The University of Adelaide was the official host and welcomed everyone. Mr Graham Bollenhagen, Grand Master of the SA/NT Freemasons spoke as did Professor Gary Wittert, Head of the School of Medicine, The University of Adelaide. "

Professor Timothy Hughes wins SA Science Excellence Award

August 2007

Professor Timothy Hughes, a titleholder in the School of Medicine (Haematology, IMVS) has been awarded the SA Science Excellence Award in the area of Excellence in Research for Public Good Outcomes. As the winner of this category, he will receive $15,000 to use for his research project or program. Prof Hughes of the Division of Haematology has been at the forefront of clinical development for Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors for Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) and has made important contributions to refining the way drugs are used to maximise their effectiveness. As well as having a major impact on the way CML patients around the world are monitored to ensure
their response is optimal, the paradigms developed by Prof Hughes and collaborators in CML are now being more widely applied to other targeted therapies used in oncology.

New Clinical Studies Advisor

Gary Wittert is very pleased to advise that Dr Helen Rossis has accepted the position of Lecturer in Clinical Studies at the TQEH while Nicole Grove is on Maternity leave.

 

New School OHS Committee

March 2007

Mr Neville De Young (Discipline of Surgery) is the new Health and Safety Officer (HSO) for the school with Ms Lisa Leopardi (Discipline of Surgery) as Deputy HSO. Mr De Young was also elected as Convenor of the School of Medicine Health and Safety Committee with Ms Allison Martinez as Secretary. Other committee members are George Hatzinikolas, Lisa Leopardi, Bronwyn Norton, Marg McGee, Kaye Brown and Peter Zalewski. The committee will meet every 6 weeks commencing on March 13th 2007.

NHMRC success for the School of Medicine

December 12, 2006

Researchers in the School of Medicine were awarded more than  11 million dollars by the National Health and Medical Research Council for funding of grants (pdf 36kB) commencing in  2007. This included a $2,000,000 CCRE grant to Professor Michael Horowitz and 19 other grants totalling $11,443,838.

Total grants commencing in  2007 from all sources was $13,080,396.
