Bachelor of Health Sciences & Honours

A major in Public Health can be taken as part of the Award of the Bachelor of Health Sciences (B.Health Sc.). The major aims to provide students with a broad-based education covering all the main disciplines required for a Public Health career.

Students complete a major in public health by incorporating the following courses into their Bachelor of Health Sciences program:

At level 1: Public Health IA (Pub Hlth 1001) (semester 1) and Public Health IB (Pub Hlth 1002) (semester 2).
At level 2: Public Health Inquiry II (Pub Hlth 2000), Public Health Sciences II (Pub Hlth 2001), semester-length courses.
At level 3: A minimum of 9 points of level 3 courses in public health. A range of topics is offered, including the possibility of completing a Public Health Internship placement in conjunction with one of a number of potential employers of public health graduates.

Bachelor of Health Sciences students with a major in Public Health may also proceed to Honours in Public Health. This is a fourth year of study open to students who have completed an undergraduate degree and who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic work in Public Health. It consists of two elective courses and a thesis.

 A published survey of all graduates from the Bachelor of Health Sciences from 1992-99 who had majored in public health can be read here (pdf 45kB).  A high proportion found employment in the public health workforce.
