Research Higher Degrees

The Discipline of Public Health has a strong research record and can supervise students in the fields of women's and children's health, health services and health systems research and environmental health, particularly communicable diseases and occupational health. The Discipline has expertise in research design and statistical analysis, epidemiology, clinical trials methodology, health services research, ethics in public health, public policy, health economics, occupational health and safety, communicable diseases, and in teaching and thesis supervision, including cross-disciplinary supervision.

The Discipline offers two research degrees. The Master of Medical Science is a two year research degree and is available to those with a medical or honours degree, or those with appropriate experience. The Doctor of Philosophy is a three year research degree available to students who have a high honours degree or equivalent.

The Discipline of Public Health accepts applicants from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. We have an internal review process to assess the suitability of applicants. Prospective applicants to the PhD or MMedSci program are strongly advised to consult the following documents for more information about application procedures.

PhD Scholarships in Public Health 

 The University of Adelaide provides scholarships for students undertaking postgraduate research. These are awarded on a competitive basis. For further information, please contact the Adelaide Graduate Centre   (for domestic students) or the International Student Office (for international students). In addition, a small number of scholarships specifically for research in public health may be available. Such scholarships are also awarded on a competitive basis.

Applications for Public Health Postgraduate Scholarships for 2009 are currently being accepted in the following areas:

  • Development of evidence-based OHS educational interventions for young workers.
  • Suitable for graduates in education, psychology, sociology and labour studies. 
  • Epidemiology of infectious diseases among indigenous Australians, 1992-2006.
  • Suitable for graduates in public health, psychology and the health sciences.
  • Developing a needs based, costed stepped-care model for child and adolescent mental health services in Australia.
  • Suitable for graduates with an understanding of mental health services, eg a psychology degree or a health sciences degree with an interest in mental health.
  • Potential PhD projects associated with Adelaide Health Technology Assessment
  • A range of projects are available working in conjunction with this group. They are suitable for graduates with a wide variety of bacgrounds including biotechnology, marketing, health sciences, psychology, philosophy and sociology.
