Adelaide Health Technology Assessment

Adelaide Health Technology Assessment conducts systematic reviews on public health and medical procedures or guidelines to provide a rational basis for health care decision-making.

Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (AHTA) Unit is located within the Discipline of Public Health, University of Adelaide and has a track record in:

  • Identifying and appraising the effectiveness of health services using evidence-based methodologies
  • Conducting systematic literature reviews on a wide range of health care topics
  • Developing evidence-based guidelines for clinical practice and program implementation
  • Collaborating with representatives of appropriate clinical specialties as well as policy-makers in the production of reports
  • Producing high quality reports, publications and other forms of media for varied audiences.
  • AHTA staff have extensive experience performing evidence-based assessments on a wide range of healthcare technologies, procedures and services. Specific processes have been developed to conduct systematic literature reviews that utilise best-practice methodologies. These are featured in our contractual work for the Department of Health and Ageing, on behalf of the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC), the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC); the National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS); and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The primary focus of our systematic reviews is to integrate and synthesise empirical research to provide a rational basis for health care decision-making including determinations of safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness that impact on health resource allocation and health service delivery. In addition, AHTA conducts Horizon Scanning on new and emerging health technologies/procedures and writes brief appraisals of these on behalf of the Health Policy Advisory Committee on Technology which reports to the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council, and the Medical Services Advisory Committee. Horizon scanning provides early warning to policy makers of particular technologies that are emerging and may have a significant impact on the health system at a national and jurisdictional level.
