   Dr Abdallah Salem

  • Position: Senior Lecturer
  • Qualifications: B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D. (Pharmacology) (Monash)
  • Location: Medical School Nth., Room N522, telephone +61-8-8303 4327, email : abdallah.salem@adelaide.edu.au
  • Academic interests: My teaching and research interests are focused on understanding the central mechanisms underlying the acute and chronic effects of drugs of abuse and dependence and in particular opiate dependence and withdrawal syndrome. I am currently investigating the role of endogenous adenosine and the 3-glucuronide metabolite of morphine in expression of opiate withdrawal syndrome in rats. I am also involved in a research project which aims to understand the central mechanisms underlying the acute and chronic neurotoxic effects of amphetamine derivatives, in particular methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ‘ecstasy’) and p-methoxyamphetamine (PMA). Most of these projects involve using microdialysis technique in awake animals.
  • Service to the Community: Participates in CSIRO Student Research Scheme (Year 9-12; supervised laboratory based research projects).
  • General Interests: (including hobbies) When not at work- enjoys reading, playing soccer and basketball.
