Drug Dependence

Recreational drug use is a common activity within our society.  Dependence on drugs and the problems that are associated with it feature as a major cause of health problems.  Pharmacological approaches can be used to help understand the mechanisms of action of these drugs, how dependence is produced, the mechanisms underlying the adverse health effects they produce and ways of treating dependence.  Our research focuses on the opioid and stimulant (amphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy, etc) groups of drugs, with an emphasis on mechanisms of action of the drugs and how they produce their toxicity as well as clinical approaches to management of dependence.
