Undergraduate Education Program
The Institute is responsible for the coordination of the ophthalmology curriculum in the undergraduate medical course.
Postgraduate Ophthalmology Training Program
The SAIO has an active involvement in the Registrar training program through the Central Northern Ophthalmic Network (CNON). The current State Qualification & Education Chairman and the Director of Training are members of the Network.
Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner Program
The SAIO coordinates this education program to ensure the provision of an alternate workforce in areas of need.
Optometrist Teaching Program
The SAIO coordinates the regular Optometrist Education Seminars held at the QEH and RAH. The QEH provides post-graduate experience for local and foreign optometrists in a purpose equipped facility.
General Practitioners
The SAIO maintains a GP education program through the Network and also provides the opportunity for clinical placements in the 3 hospitals.
Community Education Programs
The Institute takes a leading role in involving the community in eye health awareness campaigns
Continuing Medical Education
CNON Grand Rounds
A grand round involving all clinical and research staff is held every 3 months. This provides a forum for audit, case discussions and general interaction between all members of the Network and Institute. These meetings also provide an opportunity for all clinical staff to be involved fully in the management decisions of the Clinical Network. The rounds are held on a Wednesday evening at 6.30-7.30 pm with a short business meeting for all consultants held immediately after.
Professorial teaching sessions
Tutorial teaching sessions held weekly in the SAIO conference room. Professor Selva, RAH weeks 2 & 4 Monday at 8.30 am, Professor Casson, RAH weeks 1 & 3 Thursday at 6.00 pm.
Conferences
The Institute has an active role in the organization of the annual RANZCO State Scientific Meeting as well as being involved in other meetings and workshops.
