Evidence Based Practice

Joanna Briggs Institute

The Joanna Briggs Institute a research initiative of the Royal Adelaide Hospital and The University of Adelaide that promotes and supports evidence based practice. The JBI is linked to many collaborating centres throughout the world.

Each of the Collaborating Centres holds an annual professional advisory forum. This forum offers members of the Institute the opportunity to suggest possible research topics of clinical interest. The Joanna Briggs Institute endeavours to conduct Systematic Reviews and produce Best Practice Information Sheets on topics of interest to health professionals to improve clinical practice. The research areas of the Institute continue to expand as the Institute grows and productivity increases.

Each review is overseen by a locally based review panel, which includes nursing clinicians with expertise in the area and, where possible, other health professionals with appropriate expertise.

The research of the JBI is supported by membership of health care facilities, units, educational institutions, organisations, students and individual.Members of the Institute may register their interest with their local centre to be part of a review panel for a given topic or as an expert reviewer in a specialised area.

Aims and Objectives

The Institute brings together a range of practice-orientated research activities to improve the effectiveness of practice and health care outcomes by:

• conducting systematic reviews and analyses of the research literature
• collaborating with expert researchers and clinicians to facilitate the development of Best Practice Information Sheets based on the systematic review of the research
• participating in the dissemination and implementation of Best Practice Information Sheets and evaluating their impact on clinical practice
• designing, promoting and delivering short courses in evidence based for clinicians, researchers, managers and teachers
• offering direct fee for service consultancies to health service provider agencies to develop customised evidence based practice training and evidence based clinical information
• identifying areas of primary research when indicated by the findings of systematic reviews
• contributing to cost effective health care through the promotion of evidence based practice
• planning and organising regular colloquia
