CLINICAL TITLE HOLDERS

Information about being a Title Holder

A Title with the University of Adelaide is a highly regarded position for any health professional. These are appointed positions and applications can be made through the Discipline. The process of appointing a Title Holder is rigorous. Once the application form is completed and handed into the Discipline, a screening process commences. The Head of Discipline makes a recommendation to the Head of School, School of Population Health and Clinical Practice that once approved is forwarded to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the University bestows the title on to successful applicants who meet the rigorous criteria.

What is a Title Holder of the University of Adelaide, Discipline of Nursing?
Title Holders (and Affiliate Title Holders) are an integral part of the Discipline of Nursing and play a central role in the clinical programs offered by the Discipline, in higher degree supervision, and in research.

Can anybody be a Title Holder?
No. The University following rigorous approval processes awards the Titles of Clinical, Affiliate, Adjunct, Visiting and Field with level sought as Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Associate Lecturer, Research Fellow and Fellow. 

What qualification do I need?
Those contributing to a program will need to have postgraduate qualification in the particular area of practice in which they teach.

As a Title Holder, can I use facilities of the University of Adelaide?
Yes. As a Title Holder you are afforded access to a range of privileges available to other members of the University - library membership, use of University facilities, membership of the University Club, and participation (by invitation) in curriculum review and planning.

What is my role as a Title Holder?
The role of a Title Holder relates to supporting the Discipline in teaching and research.

How many hours am I expected to act as a Title Holder?
The Discipline of Nursing, in supporting the conferring of a title on an individual, expects a minimum voluntary contribution of at least 25 hours per year of substantial involvement from the Title Holder.

For how many years will I be able to call myself a Title Holder?
Titles are usually awarded for a period of five years, and at that time will be renewed if the Title Holder is still contributing to the activities of the Discipline.

Will I be paid for my contributions?
In normal circumstances the answer is no, as the position is voluntary. In addition a University Title is considered to be an honour and is recognised professionally. However, in some instances people who are Title Holders may be approached by the Head of Discipline to undertake additional duties that may be remunerated by the University. Nevertheless the question of payment is not related to the conferment of a title.

Will I be expected to become involved in any clinical research in my ward/unit area?
From time to time clinical research projects may be initiated in your work area and your expertise may be valuable in the research process. In addition, as a Title Holder you are encouraged to suggest ideas for research initiatives in conjunction with full-time academics with the Discipline of Nursing.

Submissions following conferral of the title
You are requested by the Head of Discipline to submit details of any publications you have written as part of your role as a Title Holder. We also request that you notify the Discipline of any qualifications you receive following conferral of the title so records can be updated.

Are there differences between titles?
Yes. The academic and non-academic titles awarded are Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Associate Lecturer, Research Fellow or Fellow. These titles are awarded according to your qualifications, both academic and clinical, and the contribution you will make to Discipline activities.

General
All titles are awarded in accordance with the Rules made by the University Council under Clause 3 of Chapter IV of the Statutes. (See University Administrative Handbook Sub-Section 12.8 Paragraphs 1-12 or visit the University website at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/118/)

New titles
This form should be used for cases involving appointment to a new title of Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Senior Lecturer, Clinical Lecturer or Affiliate Associate Professor, Affiliate Senior Lecturer, Affiliate Lecturer. Holders of a current Title of who are seeking re-classification to a higher level must apply through the University's annual round of promotions for academic staff. Clinical position held
For the purposes of the award of clinical titles, a clinical position is defined as one requiring a registerable medical/nursing qualification.

Curriculum Vitae
All Applicants must attach full Curriculum Vitae to their application form indicating:

  • all qualifications including College qualifications
  • work experience

Publications
The applicant must submit details of research activity which may be in the form of a higher degree and/or publications.

Discipline statement
The rules for the award of titles state that the case for granting the title in respect of any position must be based on the contribution to the academic work (teaching and research) of the relevant discipline. The Head of the relevant Discipline is required to provide full details of the potential or actual contribution made by the applicant to the work of the Discipline.

Clinical or Affiliate Chairs
Cases for the appointment of Clinical or Affiliate Chairs are considered by Special Committee of University Council.
