Major AwardsMajor Awards during 2003 The Discipline was extremely successful (strike rate of 14.3% TQEH and 36.4% RAH) in applications for the NH&MRC Project Awards with significant grants being allocated to academic staff, clinical and affiliate titleholders for the years 2004-2006. Listed by Principal Chief Investigator, grants were awarded to the following: Dr PD Zalewski (Medicine, TQEH), Professor S Kumar (Hanson), Dr P Xia (Hanson), Professor WD Tilley (Medicine/Hanson), Dr A Zannettino (Hanson), Associate Professor H Morris (Hanson), Dr P Reynolds (Hanson), Dr I Chapman (Medicine, RAH). Professor Wayne Tilley and a team of researchers was awarded an ARC Infrastructure Grant for 2004 for the purchase of an Adelaide Core Laser Capture Microscopy Facility. Professor RE Ruffin has been President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TZANZ) and Dr Simon Koblar received the Alan Kerr-Grant Award for Teaching at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Amongst other funding for 2003/2003, Dr Christine Feinle-Bisset has been awarded an NHMRC Career Development Award and a Pharmacia Foundation Australia Senior Research Fellowship both for 2004-2008. Dr Karen Jones was the recipient of an NH&MRC/Diabetes Australia Career Development Award and the Hanson Institute New Investigator Award for clinical research. Natalie Luscombe whose PhD was awarded in 2002, is the recipient of the Young Investigator of the Year award by the Australasian Society for the Study of Obesity. Dr Chris Rayner has received a Sylvia & Charles Viertel Clinical Investigator Grant of $55,000 which will support the initial stages of his research. Associate Professor James Temlett received the award of FRACP from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in November 2003 and was the recipient of a Development Grant Award of $25,000 from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Gary Wittert and a team of co-investigators have been awarded the Florey Research Grant of $450,000 to undertake a major study in the health and ageing of Australian men.
