The Royal Adelaide Hospital is a 700 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Adelaide, under the Faculty of Health Sciences. The hospital is located on North Terrace in the city centre of Adelaide, South Australia. The ICU forms an integral part of the University Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

The ICU was commissioned in 1969 and has grown to a compliment of 24 ICU and 10 flexible ICU/HDU beds. These beds cater for approximately 1500 ICU and 1900 HDU admissions per annum, composed of a mixture of general medical, general surgical, cardiothoracic, trauma, spinal injury and burns cases.  Routine cardiothoracic cases are managed in a separate dedicated ICU and the hospital does not routinely handle paediatric or obstetric cases.

The RAH is the major trauma referral centre for South Australia and approximately 800 retrievals per year are performed by the Mediflight retrieval service.
