Undergraduate Award Program (Bridging Dentistry)
The Bridging Program will not be open for applications for 2009. The program will be reviewed for possible intake in 2010.
The School is however, able to offer a one semester external course
with an on-campus hands-on block to assist with preparation for the
examinations of the Australian Dental Council. Please contact the Graduate School for information about this non-award course.

Postgraduate Award Program
The second option involves advanced selected candidates enrolling in a
special 18 month part time Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry -
Overseas Dentist Training Program. The program involves theoretical
and clinical components delivered by the University of Adelaide and the
South Australian Dental Service. Students would be employed part time
by the South Australian Dental Service in rural South Australia
following an initial period in metropolitan Adelaide. Theoretical
components aimed at preparing students for the Australian Dental
Council exam will be examined by the University of Adelaide. Clinical
components will be examined by the Australian Dental Council.
The clinical program includes rotations through the main clinical
disciplines. The theoretical aspects of clinical practice are
addressed by guided readings, preparation of seminars and other
assignments and completion of study modules that revise contemporary
dental practice.
It is proposed that the next round of selection for this program will
take place in 2007. Preference will be given to applicants who have
passed the preliminary Australian Dental Council Examinations. For

Australian Dental Council
The final option is to have the overseas qualification recognised by
the Australian Dental Council. The first step in this stream is to
apply to the ADC to have the overseas qualification evaluated. Should
the ADC approve candidates for entry to the ADC stream, candidates will
need to successfully complete an Occupational English Test, a
Preliminary Theory Examination and a Clinical Examination. Successful
completion of the Clinical Examination will enable the candidate to
register with a Dental Board in Australia. The University of Adelaide
will not be offering a NON-AWARD program which supports the ADC
Clinical Examination in 2007/08. Interested applicants should contact
the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital for details of their course. For
the purpose of migrating to Australia, those who pass the ADC Clinical
Examination will also receive 60 points toward the skills points under
the General Migration to Australia program. The Australian Dental

Application for the Award Programs
Local Applicants
Applicants who are Australian citizens, Australian permanent
residents, holders of permanent humanitarian visas and/or New Zealand
citizens (local applicants) should apply directly to the School of

International Applicants
All applicants who do not have citizenship of Australia or New Zealand
or who are not Australian permanent residents (international
applicants) should apply through the International Admissions Office of

International applicants are advised to contact the Australian Embassy
or Australian High Commission in their country as soon as possible to
obtain information on applying for a student visa.
Applications through the School of Dentistry and International
Admissions for the Bridging Program in Dentistry for admission in 2008
will close on 30th April 2007. Applications received after this date
cannot be accepted. Please do not send original documents. All
photocopies should be certified, A4 and single sided.
All applicants should include the following with their application:

undergraduate academic record
- statement of purpose- this should be demonstrated with a 500 word
typed statement of the reasons for applying for the program and
relevant dental experience
- letter of reference from 2 or 3 previous or current employers
- experience with ADC examinations
- special circumstances which may have affected academic performance
- details of additional TAFE and University studies
- written evidence of your current status in relation to Prescribed
Communicable Infections. This evidence must be in the form of results
supplied through a recognised medical provider of a blood test taken
not more than one calendar month previously and must specify Hepatitis
B antigen and antibody, Hepatitis C antibody, and HIV/AIDS antibody.
Applicants who do not present this evidence will not be considered

Selection
All applications are considered on merit and candidates are
short-listed for Stage 2 of the assessment using the following
criteria:

undergraduate academic record
- statement of purpose
- experience with ADC examinations
- special circumstances
- additional University or TAFE studies
- non award and continuing education
Stage 2 Assessment
Stage 2 of the assessment consists of two parts:
1. An oral assessment of personal skills, abilities and motivation lasting about 25 minutes
2. a viva voce examination of core dental knowledge for about 25 minutes
The results of these two assessments are collated and applicants who
have satisfied the assessors in both areas of Stage 2 are invited to
proceed to Stage 3 of the process.
Stage 3 Assessment
Stage 3 consists of two components:
1. Treatment Planning and Radiology
2. Assessment of operative skills by a series of technical exercises.
Applicants who satisfy the assessors in both components of Stage 3 will be offered a place in the Bridging Program in Dentistry
Offers
On the basis of the performance in Stage 3 of the Assessment, the
Selection Committee of the School of Dentistry confirms offers for
2008. The intake for the Bridging Program in Dentistry is yet to be
confirmed for 2008. The University of Adelaide reserves the right to
vary the number of offers. Offers of admission to the programs will be
made following a meeting of the Admissions Committee. Participants in
Stage 3 of the Assessment are required to meet with a member of staff
to discuss their program at a time to be advised.

Commencement Date
The Bridging Program in Dentistry commences early/mid January 2008
(date to be advised). It is important that students offered places are
present from the commencement of the program. Late arrival and catch
up lessons cannot be accommodated.
Fees
Bridging Program in Dentistry
The fees in 2008 are anticipated to be approximately $31,000 p.a. for
international students and are still to be confirmed for local students
(the fee was $28 000 p.a. in 2007 and is expected to increase in
2008). Students will be invoiced for tuition fees on a semester basis
plus student union and administration fees. Financial assistance is
not available from the School of Dentistry or University.
Other Information
Students are required to find their own accommodation during assessment
and during the program. Students will need to provide their own
clinical coat, laboratory coat and safety glasses. These are available
from The University of Adelaide Stationery Shop. In addition, it is
necessary to hire laboratory equipment from the Adelaide Dental
Hospital, purchase textbooks and manuals, and provide a set of Frasaco
teeth for technical work. The hire fee is approximately $600 per
annum, $200 of which is refundable. Textbooks and manuals can cost
several hundred dollars, and a full set of Frasaco teeth will cost
approximately $300.
