CLINICAL SERVICE

(a) Outpatients

Approximately 17,000 patients are seen and treated through the Outpatient Clinic in the Adelaide Dental Hospital each year. Types of patients range from complex maxillofacial surgery consultations to routine dental extractions.

(b) Inpatients

Over one-and-a-half thousand patients are admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital per year. These range from Day Stay Surgery for multiple extractions to complex facial reconstructions.

TEACHING

(a) Undergraduate

4th Year Dental students have an introductory lecture program during the second semester.

At the commencement of Final Year, students have a one-week orientation program and then split into groups of six students who then have three, two-week blocks in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery over the academic year. All students attend daily Ward Rounds. Students spend approximately half of their time performing extractions (average 150 each); a quarter of their time in consultation clinics assisting in the evaluation of pain, pathology, oral medicine and maxillofacial surgery cases and the remainder assisting in operating theatre.

The examination process consists of a written paper mid-year, a short case report, an evaluation of the clinical skills and a final viva.
