December 2007Professor Grant Townsend and Dr Toby Hughes recently participated in an international collaborating symposium on normal and abnormal development of the dentition in Liverpool. This group has now received formal recognition by the University of Liverpool as an International Centre for Research. The primary aim is to establish funding at a program grant level to conduct collaborative research on all aspects of craniofacial growth an development. The group currently has representation from Australia, the UK, Finland, France and the USA. It is anticipated that there will be significant opportunities for research exchanges of staff and students between each arm of the consortium. Professor Grant Townsend was recently awarded the title of Corresponding Member of the Finnish Dental Society Apollonia, at a special President’s Dinner in his honour in Helsinki, Finland. The prestigious award is made to researchers who have contributed substantially to dental research in Finland through their collaborations with Finnish scientists. Dr Sarbin Ranjitkar has recently returned from a 3 month research placement in London. August 2007Dr Hughes presented a talk entitled "The genetics of Dental Development - Studying Twins is Twice the Fun!" as part of a Healthy Development Adelaide thematic evening on Biting Issues in Health and Disease. June 2007Professor Grant Townsend is on study leave in Liverpool working with Professor Alan Brook and Professor Lassi Alvesalo until early February 2008. Honours student Niki Tziavaris was awarded the 2006 ADRF Leonard Hansen Undergraduate Research Prize. Ms Michelle Bockmann was awarded an ATR travel grant to participate in the 2007 MRC SGDP Summer School on twin model-fitting at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London in July. |
