Alternative pathways to studying medicine
Every year we have many hundreds of applications for our limited number of places in medicine. For this reason, we encourage all applicants to consider carefully their preferences in completing their applications. There are several pathways to studying medicine.
The undergraduate pathway
The undergraduate pathway is probably the one that most people are familiar with. Students who have recently completed their secondary schooling, apply for direct entry to an undergraduate medical program such as the one we offer at the University of Adelaide.
The graduate pathway
The graduate pathway provides an alternative route to studying medicine. A number of Australian universities offer graduate programs that are typically of 4 years duration. The entry requirement, common to all such programs, is performance in a prior undergraduate degree. In addition, applicants generally undertake an admissions test and/or interview.
While competition for these places is also intense, the ratio of applicants to places can be lower than for the undergraduate pathway.
Choice of first degree
An important consideration for students considering the graduate pathway is which degree to study first. Generally speaking, students interested in medicine will choose to study an undergraduate program which matches their interests and provides active support for career plans such as experiences with problem based learning and health-related research.
Students might consider choosing from the following types of programs offered by the University of Adelaide as the first degree for a graduate pathway to medicine.
Bachelor of Science
Bachelor of Health Sciences
Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science)
Bachelor of Psychology
