Research Interests

My research interests combine evaluation of health care interventions and evidence based medicine, with clinical obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine. Appropriate evaluation of health care interventions is essential to ensure that effective care is available for women and their babies. This evaluation involves critical appraisal and systematic review of the literature to identify areas where there are research gaps in current knowledge, and the subsequent development of randomised controlled trials to evaluate health care interventions and packages of health care.

Current research themes include evaluation of interventions to reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity, care around term and preterm birth, induction of labour, caesarean birth, multiple pregnancy, fetal anaemia (due to red cell alloimmunisation or Rhesus disease), and obesity in pregnancy.

Education and Teaching Interests

I have several students (PhD, Honours, Medical Postgraduates) involved in current research projects, and am interested in developing new research areas with enthusiastic, high achieving students with an interest in maternal fetal medicine, obstetrics, evidence based care in pregnancy and childbirth, systematic reviews and randomised trials. I also have an interest in teaching research methodologies and critical appraisal techniques to both students and clinicians.

Clinical Interests

I am an active maternal fetal medicine clinician, providing clinical care at the Women's and Children's Hospital in delivery suite, high-risk pregnancy care, and prenatal invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
